Authorizing ArcGIS Desktop Student Edition after installation (or re-authorizing an existing installation to renew for another year) requires the use of the ArcGIS Administrator. You need administrative privileges on your computer to do this, and ArcMap and Arc Catalog should not be running.
You will also need an activated ArcGIS Desktop Student Edition Authorization Code (format is EVA123456789). You can obtain an authorization code from your GIS instructor or by emailing gis@csumb.edu. To activate your authorization code, go to the ArcGIS Student Edition website. Be sure to activate your code before continuing with the process below.
Normally the Authorization Wizard Runs automatically after installing the software (skip to step 3). If it does not, you will have to start the ArcGIS Administrator yourself.
1. Close ArcMap and/or ArcCatalog if either is running. From the ArcGIS Program Group in the Windows Start Menu, choose ArcGIS Administrator.
2. Make sure Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use is selected and click the Authorize Now... button (don't worry about the Concurrent Use License Manager entry box in the middle of the panel).
3. Choose the first option "I have installed my software and need to authorize it." and click Next >
4. Choose the first option "Authorize with Esri now using the internet" and click Next >
5. Fill out the data and industry info on the next two panels (not shown here).
6. Paste your activated Authorization Number (starts w/ EVA) in the input box on the next panel & click Next >
Choose the first option "I do not want to authorize any extensions at this time" and click Next > (all extensions will be automatically authorized by the EVA code you're using)
Don't ask for any evaluation extensions and click Next>
The authorization process will run on the next panel. When it finishes successfully, your software will be ready to use. You can confirm this by checking the Availability tab on the left side in the main window of the ArcGIS Administrator. You can close the ArcGIS Administrator when finished.
