The School of Natural Sciences (SNS) is the administrative home for an array of academic degree programs, research laboratories, and community outreach programs. All SNS programs provide outstanding opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to learn how to use interdisciplinary science and technology to serve community needs. SNS places a heavy emphasis on preparing students for rewarding careers and/or more advanced academic study in fields related to environmental resource assessment, management, and policy. Faculty clusters provide particular strengths in marine and terrestrial biology/ecology, watershed science and hydrology, environmental science education, advanced technologies for geospatial data work, and molecular biology and genetics.

SNS Assistant Professor plays key role in securing Cal Fire grant
SNS Assistant Professor, Dr. John Olson, played a key role in securing a $227,591 grant awarded to CSUMB's University Corporation at Monterey Bay. The grant will cover San Benito and Monterey County’s fire prevention planning and mapping. In addition, it will provide CSUMB students with internship opportunities at Cal Fire to conduct landscape analysis.
SNS Associate Professor appointed to the AGU Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee
SNS associate professor Dr. Corey Garza was appointed to the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee for the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The committee promotes diversity and respect by facilitating organizational practices outlined in the AGU Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan.
SNS Assistant Professor Publishes Article in Global Ecology and Biogeography
Dr. Eric Crandall, SNS Assistant Professor, recently published a scientific paper in Global Ecology and Biogeography titled "The molecular biogeography of the Indo‐Pacific: Testing hypotheses with multispecies genetic patterns".
Pathway to Success: SNS Graduate Students Secure Fellowships with California Sea Grant
The School of Natural Sciences (SNS) has been home to an in-house graduate program since 2006. Originally debuted as Coastal and Watershed Science and Policy (CWSP), the program changed names in 2013 to Applied Marine and Watershed Science (AMWS). Now known as Environmental Science (ENSCI), this program has prepared numerous graduate alumni for success in the California Sea Grant State Fellows Program.
SNS Adjunct Faculty Awarded 'Best Paper' by Remote Sensing
Vince Ambrosia, SNS Adjunct Faculty member and NASA ARC-CREST Senior Scientist, was recently awarded 'Best Paper' by the peer-reviewed scientific journal Remote Sensing. The article discusses the advantages of repurposing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for use in the science research sector.
AMWS Graduate Student tackles projects, wins awards, and promotes student success prior to graduation
Jessie Doyle is a soon-to-be graduate of the Applied Marine and Watershed Science master’s program (now known as Environmental Science) at CSUMB. Throughout her time as a graduate student, Jessie has tackled an array of natural resource management projects that span the Central Coast – and the arctic.
Two SNS Alumnae Awarded 2019 California Sea Grant State Fellowships

Over the past four years, assistant professor John Goeltz has built the Laboratory for Applied Electrochemistry at CSUMB with a plan for long-term sustainability and with two main goals in mind: to create “whole” scientists and increase traditionally under-represented populations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
School of Natural Sciences Professor serves on Ford Fellows Engineering Panel
Professor Daniel Fernandez recently participated on a Ford Fellows Engineering review panel on March 7 - 8, 2019 in Irvine, CA. He and 23 other engineering panelists were part of a larger group of 160 panelists that gathered to select pre- and post-doctoral award recipients amongst the 3,000 applicants.
