The Student Leadership in Service Learning highly values the ideas of community, both internally and outside of CSU Monterey Bay. New student leaders entering into the Student Leadership in Service Learning Program complete an intensive initial training experience represented by the four-unit course SL305S, also known as the Summer of Service Learning Leadership Academy (SoSLA). This program is designed to assist in the development of students as responsible community participants and leaders in Service Learning.

Additionally, student leaders receive ongoing support and development opportunities throughout their involvement in the (sl)2 Program. Through participation in weekly program meetings, student leaders develop and sustain a learning community focused on improving their capacities in the facilitation of service learning concepts and community initiatives.
In addition to weekly program meetings, student leaders engage in professional development opportunities such as training retreats, conferences, and service learning pedagogy studies.
