Each summer, instructors from the Science Illustration Graduate Certificate Program host condensed summer classes. All levels are welcome - from interested amateurs and professionals honing their skills, to high school and college students who want to sketch the natural environment or learn to draw what they observe. Classes can be taken separately or as three consecutive 2-week courses.
Payment is due at time of registration.

Each course is 3 units.

Sketch the sweeping vistas of Carmel, tidepools of Pacific Grove, the foggy harbor of Moss Landing, as well as historic Cannery Row. The course focuses on learning to use quick observation & field sketching techniques while exploring the rich ecosystems of California’s central coast. Media explored includes graphite, ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. All levels of experience welcome.

Explore techniques necessary for illustrating marine subjects and their environments. Starting with a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, we will draw inspiration from one of the richest marine environments in the earth’s oceans. Current science illustration styles and conventions will be covered, with a focus on watercolor and graphite.

This course introduces students to illustrating science or nature subjects using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Assignments include graph design, digital inking and painting, and colorization of traditional media. Instruction covers both stand-alone digital illustration and the integration of traditional media within the digital platform. All levels of experience welcome.
