Drinking Water Quality Testing

Cal State Monterey Bay pro-actively sampled drinking water sources across campus to ensure we meet the California Drinking Water Standard limits for lead of 15 parts per billion (ppb) set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Testing was conducted in a phased approach and required specific water sources be taken off-line temporarily in order to conduct the tests. A contracted vendor took samples while the University was closed during Winter break (December 23-31) to lessen the impact on the campus. We thank the campus community for their cooperation during this time.

Results

The summary of results below indicate sites that had action levels greater than the drinking water standard of 15 ppb. The table shows the location of the fixtures, the immediate actions taken and recommendations for next steps. Complete returned results are also available for these and all buildings.

Building Name Location Immediate Action Recommendation for Next Steps
Wave Hall (4)1 - Break room sinkPosted temporary out of service sign, flushed the fixture and re-tested because of air coming out of the fixture (from non-use). Re-test indicated no lead detected.Facilities Services will replace faucet, supply piping, and angle stops.
Science Research Lab Annex (13) 9 - Lab sinksPosted temporary out of service sign.Because these sinks are rarely used, no action to repair/replace will occur. Signage will be placed to indicate these sinks are for lab use/industrial use and not to drink from these sinks.
Tide Hall (23)1 - Lower drinking fountainPosted temporary out of service sign, flushed the fixture and re-tested (assumed from non-use as bottled water is available in this lobby). Re-test indicated no lead detected. Replace the drinking fountain with a high/low wall mounted hydration station. This would also allow for the removal of the water cooler.
