In Response to New Zealand

The staff and faculty of California State University, Monterey Bay’s Health & Wellness Services extends our care and compassion for those who have been impacted by the violence that took place in New Zealand this morning. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and killed in the struggle and our hearts go out to their families and loved ones.

We recognize that those of us who either directly or vicariously experienced these events are now dealing with a wide range of feelings, such as sadness, fear, anger, helplessness, or guilt. It would also be expected that many members of our campus community who belong to marginalized and/or under-represented groups now feel vulnerable and unsafe. The values espoused by the departments and programs within Health & Wellness Services are in stark contrast to what we witnessed in New Zealand. We are committed to supporting those of all sexual orientations, gender identity/expressions, religions, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. We also join the university in its commitment to openness, inclusion, and tolerance.

For anyone needing additional support at this time, we encourage you to contact the Personal Growth & Counseling Center at (831) 582-3969 or stop by our office in the Health & Wellness Services Building (80). We also encourage you to visit our webpage, Coping with Racism and Discrimination.
