On May 10th, SAS Global Academic Program and the College of Business organized two workshops. Morning session provided important information about SAS Academic Program, its support for CSUMB Students and Faculty, emerging career opportunities in data analytics, various certifications, and academic and experiential engagement. Two Sessions were conducted in coordination with SAS Global Academic Programs. A morning Introductory Session, and a Hands-on Workshop using the Free SAS University Edition. The sessions were aimed at discovering various opportunities in data analytics/manipulation techniques available to faculty at CSUMB.
The Introductory session focused on the importance of data analytics as an embedded requirement in any contemporary field of work, improved earning for students, various support offerings for students and faculty with SAS such on-site training sessions and scholarships at Cary, North Carolina, and other academic and experiential engagement. Mr. Grant provided a n overview of digital certifications that students can earn, various resources available in terms of software offerings from SAS, both old and new. The event was attended by faculty from various colleges on campus.



The Afternoon session dealt with hands-on workshop using the free hands-on SAS University Edition. The session covered getting started with SAS University Edition, exploring data with tasks, running summary statistics and other commonly used tests, tricks and procedures in visualizing data.
The College of Business currently has a “SAS Business Analytics Joint Certification Program” that students can earn by taking the required courses and completing the requirements. Faculty uses the SAS University Edition or Base SAS and various other analytical tools as part of curriculum to impart critical skills needed for our students to succeed in a contemporary job market.

SAS University Edition is free and includes the SAS products Base SAS®, SAS/STAT®, SAS/IML®, SAS/ACCESS® Interface to PC Files, and SAS® Studio. Teachers, students, adult learners, and academic researchers can access the SAS University Edition software for non-commercial learning purposes. For more information, visit SAS University Edition. This edition of SAS works locally on your machine by using virtualization software and there are some limitations.
Mr. Tom Grant, an educator himself, is currently a principal analytical training consultant in the SAS Global Academic Program and he assists higher education institutions in the effective use of SAS. Mr. Grant has worked as a consultant, assisting SAS customers with implementation of analytic projects in various industries, including banking, retail services, insurance, manufacturing, and web-site analysis. Tom also teaches Intro to Statistics at a small liberal arts college.
