CSUMB Youth Arts Festival
ARTS WORKSHOPS! MUSIC! FILM! ART EXHIBITIONS! STEAM ACTIVITIES! OPEN MIC!
All activities are in English and Spanish.
We are so excited for the inaugural year of the CSUMB Youth Arts Festival!
We will feature music from YoSal, Visual Art from Salinas City Migrant Ed and Hijos del Sol Students and the nationally recognized Robotics Team of Monterey High.
Also featured: Peña Cultural & the 'A Today Madré exhibition - a sneak peek at the Natividad Foundation's Alebrijes y Niños project.
Musical Performance Schedule:
- 5 pm: Musical performance by Palenke Arts
- 6 pm: Musical performance by the amazing youth of Yo Sal
- 7 pm: Family-friendly open mic housted by Pena Cultural
Art Workshops (5 pm-8 pm)
- Free arts workshops for children and families with Hijos del Sol Arts Productions and the Migrant Youth Stories project from CSUMB Cinematic Arts
Arts Exhibitions (5 pm-9 pm)
- Grand Opening: A Toda Madre (To all Mothers) created by Hijos del Sol Arts Productions. Featuring works by young artists of East Salinas, this exhibition focuses on mothers and children.
- Grand Opening: Suprised by Delight by Children's and YA Author Anne Ylvisaker
- Grand Opening: Salinas Valley: Past, Present and Future with interactive STEAM activities for children provided by Firs 5 Monterey Count and Hartnell College
Youth Made Films: ongoing (5 pm - 8:30 pm)
- Films from the Migrant Youth Stories Project. The Migrant Youth Stories Project is a collaboration of CSUMB Cinematic Arts, Salinas City Elementary Schools Migrant Education and Hijos del Sol Arts Productions. CSUMB students collaborate with Salinas City Elementary Migrant Education students to engage in self- representational art works and film-making. CSUMB students also work with teachers to help with tutoring and homework support. Sponsored by CSUMB Associated Students and Honest Engine Films.
Salinas Valley: Past, Present and Future
This exhibition uses the languages of science and art to interpret the dynamic landscapes of the Salinas Valley.
The exhibition features large - scale scientific interpretation images created by CSUMB Natural Sciences students Samantha Lee, David Nava, Madalyn Price and their Geology Professor, Dr. Douglas Smith.
Experimental landscape films were created by CSUMB Cinematic Arts and Technology Students. The exhibition features translations and Graphic Design by CSUMB Communication Design Major Oscar Espinoza.
Our partners in creating interpretive images and hands-on interactive experiences for this exhibition are First 5 Monterey County, Hartnell College: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and Big Sur Land Trust.
Artist from the community were invited to contribute their images of the Salinas Valley and we are proud to feature 40 of their works. These artworks are executed in a variety of visual styles celebrating both the land and people of the Salinas Valley.
The exhibition will run from May 3 to August 2, with free events on May 3, June 7, July 5, and August 2.
Surprised by Delight
Surprised by Delight, an exhibition of poems and sketches by Monterey author and artist Anne Ylvisaker will open Friday May 3 from 5-9pm in the Gabilan Gallery at the CSUMB Salinas Center for Arts and Culture. The opening will be part of the First Friday Celebration at the center. The exhibition will run through August.
Anne started this project in the spring of 2018 as a reaction to the political and social climate, finding calm, meditation, and purpose in the practice of observing the world around her and recording it with words and lines. Her works combine pen and ink with burst of watercolor. This will be Anne's first solo exhibition.
A former teacher and celebrated author, Anne has published five novels and 20 non-fiction books for young readers. Her art has been displayed at Open Ground Studios in Monterey where she is also a student.
