An overview of jazz development from its roots in African music and American spirituals to the funeral bands of New Orleans - with an examination of the work and stylistic contributions of the great jazz originators - from King Oliver to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. Emphasis on the social, cultural, and economic circumstances that influenced the art form called jazz.
