Biography

Shannon D. Snapp is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at CSUMB and a developmental psychologist with interests in health, well-being, sexuality, gender, race, intersectionality, and sociocultural contexts that support youth. She is a member of the Society for Research on Adolescence (SRA), the Society for Research in Child Development, and has served on emerging scholar committees for both SRA and the European Association for Research on Adolescence. Shannon is a first-generation college student and is committed to training a new generation of students to reach their goals and create social change.

Shannon leads the Support Young People Project, which was created to identify factors that support underrepresented and minoritized youth’s healthy development. In the Support Young People Project, we aim to use research as a tool to reduce educational and mental health disparities among LGBTQ youth, youth of color, immigrant youth, and youth whose identities and experiences intersect. We use interdisciplinary and mixed- methods research to examine practices and policies that support and hinder young people’s well-being. We do our best to include young people’s knowledge and voices in our work to ensure our work is culturally-relevant and youth-informed.

She currently teaches "Social Psychology and Social Justice" and a new course she developed called "How to Love" on the art and science of love and intimacy.

In addition to her academic work, Shannon teaches yoga and meditation, and she is a reiki master teacher. She enjoys bringing these restorative practices into academia and the broader community. You can read more about those offerings by visiting her personal website: shannonsnapp.com
