Biography

Dr. Lewis is a Cultural Anthropologist who has lived in France and Senegal and has traveled in Europe, Africa, India and Bhutan. Her Choice-award winning book, Women at the Crossroads: A Prostitute Community's Response to AIDS in Urban Senegal, was based on her evaluation of an AIDS prevention program for sex workers.

Prior to joining CSUMB as a lecturer in 2014, Dr. Lewis worked primarily as a social science researcher and program evaluator for over 20 years. Her areas of focus include qualitative research data collection and analysis, women's health issues, AIDS care and prevention, and mental health. She has led seminal public health research projects and trainings for a range of national and international agencies, including Family Health International, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Macro International and ETR (Education, Training and Research) Associates. A highlight of her career was serving as the Executive Director of the Santa Cruz AIDS Project for over 3 years .

Dr. Lewis has taught at The American University, George Washington University, Cabrillo College, Gavilan College and Monterey Peninsula College. She currently teaches full-time at CSUMB in the School of Social, Behavioral and Global Studies and in First Year Seminar.
