Gus Leonard is the Language Lab Coordinator for the School of World Languages and Cultures. He supports faculty, students, and staff in the various technologies available for learning and teaching language and culture, and the strategies needed to implement them. Gus teaches WLC212 and WLC230.
Gus came to CSUMB in 2000 from the University of Minnesota (UMN) CLA Language Center. At UMN he earned his M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL); and also trained in Scandinavian Languages and Literature, and Instructional Technology. His BA is in English Literature and Scandinavian Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN. He is currently a student in the CODEL program at Fresno State and CSU Channel Islands and anticipates earning the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in May 2021. He has taught English as a Foreign Language in Yamanashi-ken, Japan (1995-98), English as a Second Language at UMN, and Swedish as a Foreign Language at UMN and Minneapolis Community Education programs.
Gus is an advocate for language learning and technology beyond the campus level: Secretary (2012-2017) for the International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT); Webmaster for FLAMCO; and he served as President for the SouthWest Association for Language Learning Technology (SWALLT) from 2002-2008. He volunteers locally for the Breakthrough for Men organization, is an activist in the CSUMB Local Chapter 322 of CSUEU, and is a Partner at OpenGroundStudios.com, an award-winning cooperative visual art studio and coworking space, owned together with his wife Denese. A National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) graduate, Gus enjoys the outdoors, travel, reading fantasy/SF, and exploring new foods, art, and beverages. He lived abroad in Sweden, Iceland, and Japan for nearly 6 years. He is proud of his two college-aged daughters.
