Corin recently arrived at CSUMB from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), where she spent 2 years as a postdoc in the lab of Dr. Joseph DeRisi. While in the DeRisi lab, Corin studied the brain eating amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris and, explored the metatranscriptomes and metagenomes of infected and non-infected individuals with lower respiratory and/or autoimmune disease toidentify host state specific human and microbiome signatures. Corin has a variety of research interests and, currently her work is associated with four publications in Infection and Immunity, genome Announcements, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Electrophoresis.
Corin has taught Introductory Biology, Biotechnology and/or Microbiology at the elementary, middle school, high school and undergraduate level. She is passionate about developing curriculum for a diverse student body to aid students in finding their scholarly identity and, her ultimate goal is to make science more approachable and accessible to all.
As an IRACDA (Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award) Fellow at UCSF, she worked under the mentorship of Dr. Kimberly Tanner at San Francisco State to develop culturally inclusive curricular activities. This and other professional experiences in academe, have sparked her interest in science education research which she hopes to pursue while at CSUMB.
Here at CSUMB, Corin is the new Research Curriculum Associate where she teaches students year round in UROC's Scholars, Researchers and/or Transfer Student Program. She is also working with faculty to implement course based research experiences (CUREs) and will be co-facilitating a CURE Faculty Fellowship Program this summer. As an undergraduate, Corin had the privilege of participating in two CUREs and both experiences strongly influenced her decision to pursue a graduate degree. "I retained more of the information presented in these courses because I was able to directly apply what I was learning. The discovery-based curriculum was exciting and I looked forward to attending class. I want students at CSUMB to have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences in class in this way. Excitedly, I look forward to engaging students in a dynamic and collaborative environment that is dedicated to improving the overall undergraduate experience."
