MPA 104: Musicianship I

Course description

Pitch topics include melodies with leaps within the primary triads, common melodic patterns, simple phrase structures, tendency tones, melodies in harmonic context, diatonic intervals through the octave, identification of triad and V7 chord qualities and inversions, and harmonic progressions with primary chords and their inversions; rhythm topics include common time signatures and patterns. Students perform and sight-read exercises. Individual sight-singing, rhythmic, and dictation examinations. (Prereq or Coreq for MPA Majors and Minors: MPA 100)
